About "Celebrity Night at Spago"
Some artists do their best work in the studio. The tranquility and orderly environment seem to nourish their creative skills. LeRoy Neiman, however, also draws inspiration from the energy and action he finds in the external world. So, when an opportunity arouse to join Hollywood's "movers and shakers" at Spago for the exclusive party following the Academy Award ceremonies, Neiman could hardly refuse. As he expected, most of the nominees were there, lending a palpable excitement to the night air. Neiman's serigraph also depicts several other Academy Award winners who have attended the party over the years. "Celebrity Night at Spago" allows us to share in the fun of an imagined evening with some of Hollywood's most talented entertainers. Bob Hope and Billy Crystal trade one-liners, while Sean Connery seems to offer counsel on avoiding careers pitfalls to an attentive Jeremy Irons. In the right-hand corner, George Burns, ever young, commands the attention of a group of admirers including chef-owner Wolfgang Puck, nominee Morgan Feeman and Michael Jackson, as film critic Gene Siskel looks on. At table, host "Swifty" Lazar deftly refills Gregory Peck's champagne flute, allowing him to continue his conversation with Maggie Smith without interruption. Jack Nicholson bursts into animated conversation with Paul Newman. At the other end of the table, Elizabeth Taylor pauses to contemplate a statuette of Oscar, the evening's real star, as she enjoys a light moment with Whoopi Goldberg.
