The Doctor – James Whistler Lithograph

“The Doctor” by James Whistler is just one of the thought provoking pieces of art on display at Centaur Art Galleries of Las Vegas, NV. “The Doctor” is a full body portrait of Whistler’s brother who used his skill as a surgeon during the American Civil War and after in London and Paris. Whistler uses what he knows as inspiration. This is what makes his work so personal and intimate. James Whistler was one of the great artists seen during the nineteenth century though “The Doctor” is one of Whistler’s later lithographs. He loved music as well as art. “The Doctor” was etched in recognition of his brother coming to his residence in Paris to see his sick wife. He has a great reputation as an etcher. Much of his work is of family portraits. Whistler uses much detail in his brother’s face, but his use of lines and shading is exquisite. There are no colors except black in his etchings to imply harmony. Lines are more important than color and black is the fundamental are two principles he believed true. Black was also one of the first colors used by artists. During the 18th and 19th centuries, black was a dominant color in fashion. Paris became the fashion capital of the world. Lines are just a piece of music just as the lines he uses are only pieces of his art. They are only pieces of a whole.

Centaur Art Galleries of Las Vegas, Nevada possess many different styles of art from two dimensional pieces to three dimensional pieces. Painting is obviously the most common medium used, but three dimensional artwork is becoming more and more popular. Sculptures are three dimensional art pieces. Salvador Dali dabbled in painting, drawing, photography, sculpting, and cinematography. He was a great Spanish surrealist. Politics later disconnected Dali from the surrealist movement, but he always considered himself a surrealist as is portrayed in his work.

Salvador Dali’s piece “Dance of Time III” is seen displayed at Centaur Art Galleries of Las Vegas, Nevada. Dali’s “Dance of Time III” is a bronze sculpture of a melted pocket watch. Dali’s melting watches are seen in many of Dali’s works, and are very well-known. “Dance of Time III is the third piece of his Dance of Time series. Dali is described as being eccentric. He is known for his flamboyant moustache. He definitely danced to his own beat as he depicted in his sculpture. Science also played a major role in Dali’s life. The idea of quantum mechanics and Werner Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle were accepted into the field of science. Time has so much to do with science hence the watch. Time is precise in respect to science, but Dali includes the human notion of time as being unknown.

LeRoy Neiman – Serigraph Artist

LeRoy Neiman is best known for his use of striking colors and his lively scenes of sporting events and leisure activities. He interpreted the life he knew. The setting of the serigraph is a Las Vegas casino. The viewer’s attention is brought to the center table where the dealer and the many gamblers are playing the game of “21.” The gambler’s faces are expressionless to portray their “poker faces.” Neiman has a great talent for making the observer feel a part of the scene. “21” is a fast moving game. Neiman has a very sudden style about his artwork. His style helps give the observer the impression of the rick associated with the game. Some debate the scene depicted is inside the MGM Grand.
